Stand here with me on Beach Street — Lebuh Pantai — and I want you to understand something extraordinary about this street: it was literally the beach. Before the British started their massive land reclamation projects in the 1800s, this street was where the Penang coastline ended and the sea began. Now it's in the middle of the city. Pretty remarkable geographic transformation, kan? But more than that, Beach Street became something even more important: it became the financial and banking center of Penang, even of Southeast Asia. This street earned the nickname 'The Wall Street of the East' during its heyday. Think about that. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Beach Street was where the money flowed, where international commerce was financed, where fortunes were made and lost.
