Welcome to Kapitan Keling Mosque, and I want you to understand something fundamental about Penang: this is the only place in Malaysia — maybe the only place in the world — where you can stand at a single intersection and literally see four places of worship. A mosque, a Chinese temple, a Hindu temple, and a Christian church — all within walking distance of each other. Can you think of anywhere else where that's possible? That's not accidental, lah. That's the story of Penang, told in architecture. This mosque was built around 1801 by Cauder Mohudeen, the first kapitan — which means 'leader' or 'captain' in Malay — of the Indian Muslim community. When the British and Chinese merchants were establishing themselves in Penang, Indian Muslim traders were right there too, creating networks of commerce that stretched from the Middle East to Southeast Asia to India. These men needed a place to pray, to gather, to reinforce their community bonds in a foreign land. So Cauder Mohudeen, who himself was a successful merchant, decided to build a mosque that would serve his community for centuries to come. Look at the architecture now.
