Dr. Sun Yat-sen himself, one of the most important figures in modern Asian history, used this place as his base of operations. Can you believe it? From Penang! A brilliant young doctor named Sun Yat-sen believes there's a better way forward — a republic, democratic principles, a new China. But the authorities back home?

They want him dead. So he travels, organizing, fundraising, planning. And he comes to Penang, multiple times actually — at least six times — because the Chinese community here? They get it. They understand his vision. They support him financially, emotionally, passionately. This building used to be a reading club called the Philomatic Union, a place where educated Penang Chinese gathered to discuss ideas and share knowledge. Sun Yat-sen transformed it into something more revolutionary.
